Koala
Behavioural adaptations
- Koalas climb tall trees for food, shelter and protection from ground predators.
- Male koalas release a scent to mark their trees, by rubbing the gland against the trunk of the tree, informs other male koalas that it is "his" tree.
- There is always one dominant male in each social group.
- Koalas feed alone and travel alone; unless they have a child with them.

Physiological adaptations
- Koalas have low metabolic rates which allow koalas to retain food within their digestive system for a long period of time, which minimises the excretion of energy.
- Koalas have curved spines which consist of cartilaginous pads on the rear end, this allows these animals to rest on trees comfortably.
- The liver in koalas inactivate the toxic components in eucalyptus leaves.

- Koalas are heavily dependent on their smell. Koalas have a big nose which is needed to determine if the eucalyptus leaves are poisonous or not.
- Koalas have unique paws, they are heavily padded, which allows for better grip to climb, they also have sharp claws to help the koala climb.
- Koalas have a dense, woolen coat. This coat protects them from the heat and the cold. The coat is water resistant to deflect moisture when it rains.
